ALPS Annual General Meeting

The dates and host pools for 2010 ALPS events have been posted on our Events page.

Important change to ALPS swimming rules

The practice of wearing 2 swimsuits (one on top of the other) when competing
has recently been banned by both FINA and SNC because it can provide increased “buoyancy” and an unfair advantage to a swimmer.  To ensure fair play for our ALPS competitions (and because we follow most of the Swimming Natation Canada (SNC) regulations), please note that the  “one swimsuit” rule will be applied at all ALPS Dual Meets, effective immediately.

The regulation is as follows:

1) Before a race: if the Referee (or another senior Official) notices a swimmer wearing more than one suit, the swimmer will be told that they are in violation of the rule (and if there is time, they will be given the opportunity to change their swimwear before swimming).

2) After a race : if the Referee (or another senior Official) thinks that a swimmer may have worn more than one suit for a race, the Referee will approach the swimmer when the swimmer gets out of the pool to verify the swimwear. If the swimmer is wearing more than one suit, the swimmer will be DQ'd from the previous race and their team's points will be adjusted accordingly.

Please note that this rule will also be strictly applied at both SECTION FINALS and FINALS .

2009 President's Cup Winner

Each year, the president of ALPS awards a trophy in recognition of the volunteer within ALPS whose unselfish contribution of time, talent and dedication will never be forgotten.

The 2009 recipient was Christiane Callary who was the synchro coordinator of ALPS for the past seven years. Erik Bedard, ALPS past president, prepared the following tribute to Christiane which was presented by Don Norris, the current ALPS president, and Garry Milton , the past past president, at the Senior solo & Duet competition at Viking pool on Thursday, August 6th.

Christiane grew up in aquatics, starting at her home pool Valois, while participating in all the aquatic disciplines. But for some reason or another, the synchronized swimming aspect of aquatics stirred her curiosity and she has been involved in it ever since as a competitor, coach, coordinator and now mentor.Christiane is a true synchro advocate as she has given over half of her life to a sport that she truly loves.
Christiane has been coaching competitively for the Dollard Synchronized Swimming Club for the past 12 years and continued to do so this year while expecting her and her husband Vince's first child. She has led many successful teams to a national medal podium finish but ALPS has seen her in a different light.

Erik Bedard, Don Norris, Christiane Callary and Garry Milton

Christiane has coached synchronized swimming in ALPS for 12 years, the summer of 2004 being her last one. Throughout this time, we have seen the effect of her competitive desire, especially when she was the head coach at Viking pool, where she changed the environment and attitude to a dominating and enriching synchro force. Year after year Viking had consistently led the medal hunt while ensuring that the girls had fun being of part of such an organized and wining team.

To this day, we still see the desire at the pool where she had her lasting effects, as Viking has been the dominant powerhouse of the synchro summer world for the past two seasons. Christiane is a leader who knows synchronized swimming operations from top to bottom, which is why she joined the ALPS Executive as the Synchro Coordinator in 2002. She held this position for 7 years until stepping away from the Executive this year to focus on her impending new family. She has always recruited and led many skilled judges to enhance the ALPS synchro experience. If you ever had a question or comment, she always made herself available to the public and had enough influence to get synchro teams started at pools that never had such a team. Last year CAVIP immensely thanked Christiane for all the time she spent at their pool helping the coaches out with routines as synchro was a totally new aquatic discipline for them.

As an Executive member, Christiane was known for her leadership, organizational and administrative skills, she would do anything for the love of this sport.  She is the model synchro enthusiast and booster and we simply cannot thank her enough for all she has done to help promote this sport in ALPS and to have that continuing lingering effect on kids, coaches and adults. Even though she is no longer part of the Executive or any ALPS pool, we can still see a glimpse of her at our summer events and the whisper of her name will echo forever.

ALPS trophies - a bit of history

Erik Bedard, the past president of ALPS, has spent put together a list of all ALPS trophy winners.

We seem to be missing some winners in each discipline and we could use your help.

If your club has records and could help fill in the gaps, it would be very helpful. Please email Erik with any input you may be able to provide.

ALPS Website down

As of July 6th, 2009 ALPS moved its website files to a new web host.

We would like to express our gratitude to Chris Vandersluis, president of the NAA, and his company HMS Software for generously hosting the ALPS website free of charge for the past six years.

Many thanks, Chris for your help and for your co-operative spirit.

ALPS 2009 RULE BOOK

Over the past few years, the ALPS rules for all four disciplines were combined into one document. In 2006, the process was completed, with the rules re-numbered and/or re-ordered within their discipline, and many with revised wording [with no change to their meaning]. Each year, each pool will receive one printed copy but anyone can download and print a copy.
Just click here for the 2009 version (pdf format).
ALPS COMPLAINT PROCEDURE
Based on feedback from our annual wrap-up meeting in the fall of 2006, we have developed a formalized complaint procedure to be used when the actions or behaviour of an individual or team is not acceptable according to the ALPS Code of Conduct. It defines the individuals to contact at each step and the maximum time delay for each step.
ALPS CODE OF CONDUCT

This is a written contract between parents, participants, and coaches to abide by the rules and regulations of their sport, as well as to maintain a cooperative attitude and to uphold the ideals of fair play and sportsmanship. This contract is more than just paper; it is the essence of the ALPS philosphy and so it's important that all children, parents, and coaches read this document, understand it, and, if they choose to participate in ALPS-organized, inter-club competitions, that they agree to uphold its principles.

The ALPS Code of Conduct is available in both English and French at the end of the rule book file.
