Upcoming Meetings
September 2010
Date TBA
Feedback Meeting for ALPS Reps and Executive Committee
ALPS Reps are encouraged to gather feedback from their pool committees, staff and members about what worked well in 2010 and what might be improved in the future, and to bring that information to this meeting. This includes any proposed changes to the existing ALPS rules for all of the disciplines. In this way, ALPS tries to keep up with any relevant changes and to provide our members with the best possible aquatic programs. Any proposed changes to the ALPS rules will be voted on at the AGM in May of 2011.
The date and location of the Feedback Meeting will be communicated to all ALPS representatives by email and will be posted here once they have been finalized.

2010 President's Cup Winner

Each year, the president of ALPS awards a trophy in recognition of the volunteer within ALPS whose unselfish contribution of time, talent and dedication will never be forgotten.

The 2010 recipient was Garry Milton, the past past president and current secretary of ALPS. Here's what ALPS president Don Norris had to say during the presentation of the award at Swimming Finals:

Garry has been involved in the ALPS community for many years now, beginning as a member at Cedar Park Pool, eventually joining the pool committee, and later being voted into the ALPS Executive Board. Throughout his time in ALPS, Garry has always believed in the ALPS spirit of participation, community, and athleticism.

The Miltons joined Cedar Park Pool in 1991. They have been long-standing members ever since, and now their youngest daughter Jen remains on staff as the Senior Assistant Manager, holding up the family’s link to the past 20 years. Garry and his wife, Wendy, became the Co-Presidents of Cedar Park Pool in 1998 after being long-term members of the pool’s Executive Committee. As Co-Presidents of Cedar Park Pool, both Garry and Wendy continually showed respect for all staff, committee, and pool members, all the while promoting participation, sportsmanship, and pool spirit that would live on for years to come.

Unknowingly, and with a surprise nomination, Garry was elected as ALPS President for a three-year term commencing in the summer of 2002. He ran ALPS as he did Cedar Park: with honour, respect, and a commitment to achieving the highest standard of reputation. It could not have been easy balancing both positions, President of ALPS and Co-President of Cedar Park, displaying a great sense of impartiality as decisions were required, and keeping up with his regular work schedule at Concordia University as Executive Director of the President’s Cabinet. ALPS became more modernized and Internet savvy during his tenure; Garry helped to realize this move forward in technology and he utilized every member of the ALPS Executive to their full potential. Garry continued to influence and support future ALPS Presidents while remaining on the Executive as Past-President, and after one short year away from ALPS, as the current ALPS Secretary. He continues to give advice to all of the ALPS Executive Members, including his daughter, Sarah, as she enters her second year as the ALPS Synchronized Swimming Coordinator.

Garry is truly deserving of this award. It’s as if, 11 years after the award was first given out, that the criterion for this award was destined to have his name engraved on it. Those who have worked with Garry should feel truly fortunate that they have had a chance to do so. Those who have had a chance to have an intellectual conversation with Garry, whether it be about summer pools, aquatics, or regular life, should always remember it. Those who have taken his leadership to heart and applied it to their everyday life should cherish it. One day, when Garry officially retires from the pool and ALPS Executive life, he will finally be able to change his title from “still working with no salary” to “officially retired”.

Congratulations on your award Garry – you truly deserve it.

ALPS trophies - a bit of history

Erik Bedard, past president of ALPS, has spent put together a list of all ALPS trophy winners.

We seem to be missing some winners in each discipline and we could use your help.

If your club has records and could help fill in the gaps, it would be very helpful. Please email Erik Bedard with any input you may be able to provide.

2010 Message from the ALPS President

Welcome, everyone, to the 53rd ALPS season.

It is always difficult deciding on the topic to write about but this year was an exception as my message is about the lifeblood of ALPS: its volunteers. Without our dedicated volunteers, there would be no ALPS!

Consider for a minute how many individuals are involved for a Wednesday night dual swim meet: one referee, one starter, two stroke and turn judges, two place judges, at least twelve timers, one chief timer, two chief finish judges, two or more runners, two recorder/scorers, two or more people to hand out ribbons, and the meet manager. This adds up to 28 individuals volunteering their valuable time as officials. To this number, add the individuals running the canteens and Bar-B-Qs, multiply that by ten swim meets per week and that gives you a rough idea of how many volunteers are involved just on Wednesday nights. Add to this the number of people involved in organizing, helping-out and officiating at the Diving Meets and Waterpolo games, Synchronized Swimming Meets and the various tournaments and “event finals” as well as those who volunteer on our twenty-two pool committees, the ALPS Reps, and the ALPS Directors, and you begin to get an idea of how many people are involved in providing the volunteer base necessary for ALPS to continue. What is most heartening is that all of this is being done to continue the positive environment that ALPS provides to our young athletes.

My message is very simple: thank you all so very much for your time and your efforts - you are the BEST!

Parents, when you come to the pool, don't just drop off your children; stay, get involved, become a volunteer, become a board member. We need you. Your pool and ALPS is only as good as its volunteers.

The ALPS philosophy says that: “in any competition there is always a winner and a loser. There is nothing wrong with winning – we all like to win. But when some clubs put winning above all, ahead of fair play and total involvement, then everyone has lost something, the competitors, the clubs, and the ALPS organization.” Let's keep this spirit alive.

Best of luck to all clubs in their competitions and may your 2010 ALPS experience be a positive one.

Don Norris
ALPS President

Important change to ALPS swimming rules

The practice of wearing 2 swimsuits (one on top of the other) when competing
was banned last year by both FINA and SNC because it can provide increased “buoyancy” and an unfair advantage to a swimmer.  To ensure fair play for our ALPS competitions (and because we follow most of the Swimming Natation Canada (SNC) regulations), please note that the  “one swimsuit” rule will be applied at all ALPS Dual Meets, effective immediately.

The regulation is as follows:

1) Before a race: if the Referee (or another senior Official) notices a swimmer wearing more than one suit, the swimmer will be told that they are in violation of the rule (and if there is time, they will be given the opportunity to change their swimwear before swimming).

2) After a race : if the Referee (or another senior Official) thinks that a swimmer may have worn more than one suit for a race, the Referee will approach the swimmer when the swimmer gets out of the pool to verify the swimwear. If the swimmer is wearing more than one suit, the swimmer will be DQ'd from the previous race and their team's points will be adjusted accordingly.

Please note that this rule will also be strictly applied at both SECTION FINALS and FINALS .

ALPS 2010 RULE BOOK

Click here for the 2010 version. If you are a coach, or if you or your child will participate in ALPS competitions this summer, please be sure to read the rules of the discipline(s) in which you'll participate. As well, read the rules about eligibility to compete. These rules are in place to make our competitions as fair as we can make them. Ignorance of the rules will not be accepted as a defense against an infraction.
ALPS COMPLAINT PROCEDURE
Did you know that ALPS has a formalized complaint procedure? This is a list of the steps that will be followed when the actions or behaviour of an individual or team is not acceptable according to the ALPS Code of Conduct. It defines the individuals to contact at each step and the maximum time delay for each step.
ALPS CODE OF CONDUCT

This is a written contract between parents, participants, and coaches to abide by the rules and regulations of their sport, as well as to maintain a cooperative attitude and to uphold the ideals of fair play and sportsmanship. This contract is more than just paper; it is the essence of the ALPS philosophy and so it's important that all children, parents, and coaches read this document, understand it, and, if they choose to participate in ALPS-organized, inter-club competitions, that they agree to uphold its principles.

The ALPS Code of Conduct is available in both English and French at the end of the rule book file. The entire ALPS competitive schedule is also there.
